ABOUT: Founded in 2017 by a group of concerned Roosevelt High School Alumni and local residences opposed to the demolition of the historic R Building on the campus of Roosevelt High School, the mission of the Committee to Defend Roosevelt High School is to bring to light the Social Injustice that was embedded into the history of Boyle Heights and to research, archive, and preserve the history, buildings and landmarks of Boyle Heights. Redevelopment around transit hubs such as Mariachi Plaza or along commercial corridors such as Cesar E. Chavez Ave., formerly known as Brooklyn Ave., are threatening to erase the places that tell the stories of the community and culture once considered to be “the Ellis Island of the West Coast” for welcoming Latino, Japanese American, Russian Molokan, African American, Armenian, and Chinese American communities, among others

What is CEQA? What is a DEIR?

  • The California Environmental Quality Act is California's premier environmental law. (CEQA) is a state statute that requires LAUSD to undertake specified environmental review of projects prior to approval by the LAUSD Board of Education

  • The law ensures that there is protection of the environment and informed self government. The law functions by including the public's point of view, through notice and comment opportunities, to inform government decisions. 

  • The California Environmental Quality Act.

  • The Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) includes a description of the project and its potential environmental impacts.

  • DEIR Public Comment Period Deadline March 23, 2018

Alternative 2 - Retention and Renovation of Building 1:

Under Alternative 2, Building 1 would be retained and renovated. The renovation would consist of seismic, ADA accessibility and life/fire safety upgrades to meet current DSA and LAUSD standards. The purpose of this alternative is to renovate Building 1 and maintain the historic character/character defining features of the building such that the significant unavoidable impact associated with loss of the
individually eligible resource would be mitigated.

The Committee met with LAUSD, as LAUSD did not want to delay their timeline and created a one-sided term agreement, which due to time constraints and feeling vulnerable, we signed it without realizing the full impact until it was time to review, amend and challenge the LAUSD Settlement Agreement.



This LAUSD Settlement Agreement stipulated settlement for the committee’s startup Community Center (aka Social Justice Learning Center). The committee planed to have our Community Center’s design incorporate influences from the R Building as well as many artifacts from the classrooms, and auditorium. This center may be on the Roosevelt campus and be open to the public. The Committee needs to provide the additional fundraising efforts, and it needs your support.



Our Community Center would have been dedicated to those of us who fought to save the R Building, alumni, parents of students attending, historians, and, of course, the Committee to Defend Roosevelt and Alumni Gil Cedillo and Alumni/Assemblywomen Wendy Carrillo.
